Last Wednesday, an Unknown random Reddit user who's username is "/u/HanAssholeSolo" became suddenly famous when he posted a GIF titled 'Trump takes down fake news (Colorized, 2017)' to Reddit's largest pro-Trump subreddit, /r/The_Donald.
The post gained a few thousand upvotes and, according to Reddit's publicly available metrics, wasn't even in the top 20 of the most popular posts on /r/The_Donald in the last week.
Nevertheless, the president ended up retweeting it
Reddit's Users Threw a celebration when the knew the president saw their memes.
Rumors say that the president has a specific group which follows the memes and in-jokes for his tweets and speeches on social media.
Right after the celebration, a user noted that Trump didn't tweet HanAssholeSolo's gif.
Even though HanAssholeSolo's gif has been taken down, screenshots remain to prove the differences.
To explain, what Trump Tweeted was a video AND has an audio
While HanAssholeSolo's gif had a different aspect ratio and had a WWE Logo in the corner.
It's clearly explained here
Other indications were the difference between the user's gif and the video and HanassholeSolo's Original Gif was uploaded directly to Reddit which means the Gif became an HTML5 video file.
What does all of this mean?
Simply that someone downloaded the GIF posted originally on Reddit. Then the person cropped the GIF to fit the video player such as Facebook and youtube. Then they went all the way to sync it up with audio from the original clip. Then the person Published it in a place where one of Trump's people could see it and share it.
After the tweet was shared news organizations went on the hunt for this Reddit user.
The problem is that there is a still unknown third party here who is just as important, if not more important, to this story.
Regarding the question of what Trump or his team views online, the fact this video is based on a GIF from Reddit only means that whoever made the video version reads /r/The_Donald. Whoever forwarded the video almost certainly didn't get it off of Reddit.
