Jodie Whittaker, the actress who rose to fame in Broadchurch is the first woman to play the Doctor in BBC drama, replacing Peter Capaldi, who announced in January that he would leave after the 2017 Christmas Special.

Whittaker is expected to first appear in the Christmas Special and take over the role in the following season.

The actress also said to BBC:

"It feels completely overwhelming; as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be, it feels incredible."
